Mines Minister Mawell Mwale has accused Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata of scheming to raise campaign funds by calling for the re-introduction of the old mining development agreements.Mr Mwale says Mr Sata's calls are a mere campaign gimmick to raise funds for the 2011 tripartite elections. He said Mr Sata has also shown lack of seriousness and consistency because his party has all along been calling for higher taxes to be slapped on mining companies.Mr Mwale said this in an interview with ZNBC news in Lusaka monday. The Minister said government did away with development agreements because the taxes mining companies were paying were too low.Under the old tax regime mining companies were paying mineral royalty at 0.6 percent compared to the current fiscal regime were they pay three percent. But Mr Sata has maintained his call for the re-introduction of mining development agreements.Mr Sata said Zambians will only benefit from their mineral wealth once mining development agreements are re-introduced.Ends
