MMD, UPND cadres clashBy BOB SIANJALIKA and GIDEON THOLESOME MMD and United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres yesterday clashed in Limulunga during the on-going campaign for the Luena parliamentary by-election.And the Patriotic Front (PF) and MMD in Ndola have expressed satisfaction at the manner in which campaign activities for the Chifubu parliamentary by-election are being conducted and urged their party cadres to desist from any acts of violence.In Limulunga, the heated confrontation and exchange of punches occurred when the UPND cadres were welcoming their leader, Hakainde Hichilema who arrived yesterday to drum up support for the party’s candidate, Muyunda Ililonga.As Mr Hichilema’s motorcade was entering Limulunga, an MMD campaign motor vehicle was overtaking and the cadres immediately picked a quarrel.The cadres from the two camps exchanged punches for about a minute while others threw stones at their rivals.Mr Hichilema, who was waving the party symbol as he was being driven and standing on the vehicle sunroof, tried to prevent the cadres from the confrontation.As he later left for the UPND constituency office to address some supporters, some of his cadres went back to the MMD centre after hearing that there was an attempt to block the road leading to the venue where the UPND meeting was to be held.Mr Hichilema urged the people of Luena to reject poverty and economic hardships by voting for Mr Ililonga.Speaking when he addressed two meetings in Limulunga yesterday, Mr Hichilema said people should vote for the UPND now and in 2011 so that they could have better lives. Meanwhile, the PF and MMD are satisfied with the manner in which campaign activities for the Chifubu by-election have been conducted.And the Ndola police command and campaign team leaders yesterday afternoon held a closed-door meeting aimed at ensuring that their party cadres and law enforcement officers worked in harmony during the campaigns.
