Many of us in Zambia cannot recall feeling as much joy as we felt when Zambia scored that winning goal against the highest ranked team in Africa, the Great Elephants of the Ivory Coast.

Mr. Bob Sichinga, the Minister of Commerce, expressed sentiments about nationalization and parastatals that were utterly shocking for this day and age. One would have expected that the old guards who lived through the era of parastatals would be the least inclined to say anything positive about that disastrous era (and the possibility of ever returning to it).

I would like to respond to one of the comments on my last article, made by someone who politely disagreed with my position and who sounds sincere enough in his support of the president's approach. He was commenting on my argument that there is a high cost we will pay for actions like reversing the sale of Zamtel.

One of the exercises being conducted by the new Zambian government that is too costly is the way they are supposedly fighting corruption. By trying to correct everything that happened in the past, they are simply incurring a cost that might be too painful for the nation.

I can not deny that Mister Michael Sata's presidency has by and large brought a lot of optimism and excitement among many objective minded Zambian citizens. Some of the changes, especially in the way the public media operates, is a complete breath of fresh air compared to the past.

Zambia is now officially the African country that is closest to achieving a proper electoral democracy; the Democratic Republic of Congo, like most other African countries, is unfortunately still on the other end of the spectrum.

The appointments by the president into cabinet and other positions have brought up a brewing debate on tribalism. Some people have indeed analysed the numbers to show that there has been a conspicuous pattern of people appointed from the president's own tribe.

The main lesson to learn from the life of Steve Jobs is the power of an independent mind and an independent life. The level of independence required for his level of innovativeness is of course the rarest kind: the kind that fears absolutely nothing and no one, and cares nothing about people's opinions of oneself, and people's opinions of one's life.

Mr Sata’s decision to raise the minimum wage is his first economic mistake as president of Zambia. Hopefully there won’t be too many such mistakes on balance, compared to good decisions.
